Parents and schools
Many parents are involved with their child’s school. A number of places on a school’s
governing body are reserved for parents. The governing body decides how the school is
run and administered and produces reports on the progress of the school from year to
year. In Scotland, parents can be members of school boards or parent councils.
Schools must be open 190 days a year. Terms dates are decided by the governing body or
by the local education authority. Children must attend the whole school year. Schools
expect parents and guardians to inform them if their child is going to be absent from
school. All schools ask parents to sign a home-school agreement. This is a list of things
that both the school and the parent or guardian agree to do to ensure a good education for
the child. All parents receive a report every year on their child’s progress. They also have
a chance to go to the school to talk to their child’s teachers.
