Independent schools are private schools. They are not run or paid for by the state.
Independent secondary schools are also sometimes called public schools. There are about
2,500 independent schools in the UK. About 8% of children go to these schools. At
independent schools parents must pay the full cost of their child’s education. Some
independent schools offer scholarships which pay some or all of the costs of the child’s
education.
